Debbie Ziegelmeyer

Debbie Ziegelmeyer

The blisters, the sunburn, the heat, none of this bothered Chuck now that he was doing this the right way. It didn’t matter that he probably wouldn’t find anything; at least he was now involved in a proper investigation. That, to him, was the high; flashing back to every UFO sighting he’d researched, every animal mutilation he’d studied—it wasn’t finding answers that gave him that thrill, it was searching for them—applying scientific methods to something that seemed to defy science.

And then, suddenly, Debbie had gone quiet next to him, when she had, in fact, found something.

She held the metallic triangle higher, and they watched how the breeze seemed to pull at the material, threatening to send it floating right out of her hand. It shone like a bit of polished Mylar.

“It’s so light. But it doesn’t feel like foil.”

The material resembled what Mac Brazel and Jesse Marcel had described when interviewed by Roswell investigators, such as the nuclear physicist Stanton Friedman, as well as Carey and Schmitt.

Since Doleman was still out of earshot, Chuck quickly found a plastic specimen bag. He and Debbie carefully placed the triangular piece into the bag, sealing it tight. Then together they rushed to where Doleman and Carey were still deep in conversation.

Chuck interrupted the two men, and Doleman let Debbie undo the seal of the bag. Together the four of them took turns peering at the glimmering object. Eventually, Doleman held it between his fingers and an envelope, trying to get a better look.

“I don’t know what it is,” Doleman said. “It’s not naturally occurring, but other than that, it could be anything.”

“Certainly interesting,” Carey said. “Tag it and bag it.”

To Chuck’s surprise, Carey started walking toward the truck that had brought them out to the field. But Doleman still seemed sufficiently intrigued by the object.

“Take a few pictures first. Then we’ll give it a number and send it to the University of New Mexico with whatever else was found during the dig.”
